Last Saturday, my 8 year old son took his first Derby with his Cub Scout room. Many students, parents, brothers and Cub Scout leader has been shown for the event. What is a space derby? Well, it's probably a little 'different from what you think.

Each Cub Scout is given a room with their kit Cub Scout Derby. The kit includes balsa wood, that take advantage of each participant to form the body of a rocket. There are also plastic kit that can be cutFashion for the rocket fins. Here is where it starts to sound a bit 'weird. There is also a propeller in the kit. An engine? I thought this was a rocket? Well, it's really like a rocket, but the propeller pushes the rocket into reality. Scouts race their four rockets at once. The rocket hung horizontally from the propeller of a fishing line and are connected by a rubber band that comes with the kit for the supply of electricity.

The rockets are judged in three categories: speed, beauty andOriginality. It quickly becomes clear that the main thing that makes her a rocket "weight fast. Since all the rockets are the same power and receiving the same injury, the lighter the rocket will go faster. However, if your light rocket, not there is a risk of structural failure, when the bands are wound. So there is a balance to have a missile armed with a light but fast.

My son and I decided to go for the beauty category, since this was his firstderby. We wanted an idea, like the other missiles would be carried out in terms of speed to get this time. We followed the instructions in the kit and started pasting together the two halves of balsa wood. Later we used to start very natural abrasive paper, the shape of our rocket. Later I found out from some of the other parents that a vegetable peeler works wonders for smoothing the wood from the rocket body in raw form to obtain. Do not start with this information, we sandpaper. Once we gotthe basic shape we wanted, we have finer sandpaper. We changed to 400 sandpaper, then 800

Subsequently, there will be sprayed with a primer on the rocket. Once the primer dries thoroughly, we have refined with sandpaper 800. We then added another layer of primer and sanded again. We continued this process until the rocket body was smooth enough to satisfy us. I have a friend who I used sanding the bottom would have to say. He says that he cracks in balsa wood on a single tank ortwo layers. I'll take his word. I used regular spray paint the bottom … the stuff cheap.

Once we have finished sanding and priming, we sprayed a coat of candy apple red on the body. When spray painting, there are a few tips that will make a huge difference in the finished model will look like. Spray paint in a well ventilated area. It 'important to keep the spray, may be the right distance from the model … It is recommended that more than 6 inches in order. If you likeclose the paint will run in them, too far and the paint is an orange peel effect (which will look rough and dull) have. Keep the can moving while spraying … Here, too, spent too long in one place and keep a running not-so-great achievement.

When you spray your rocket, you can fashion a body bar made from a coat hanger. This will always prevent paint all over her hands and fingerprints before fresh in the final. Be sure to have asafe place where you can place the end of your hanger, keeping the paint fresh to touch anything until it dries. Wait for the paint to dry (30 minutes) before applying a second layer or (2 to 4 hours) before they hit the rocket body, depending on the humidity.

Once the first coat is dry, we have a second layer of Candy Apple Red we painted the chrome fins and propeller after filling it. Since we do not have any decals on hand, I had to take silver and black sharpiesFlashes on the mailing labels. Then I cut the bolts off and stuck on the rocket body. My wife uses a fine tip black marker by Captain Justin Rodgers one of the tail fins of the rockets' add.

Justin Rocket took first place in the category beauty. He did OK in terms of speed, but there are definitely lighter than a rocket next year. I hope that you will find some useful tips in this article to build its own space rocket derby.
